I am a seasoned individual contributor and leader of small groups in Product Management, where I have spent more than 12 years actively building products and services that customers love. Most of this work has focused on e-commerce, but more recently, I have increasingly been specialising in adding Machine Learning techniques to improving conversion, automating purchasing, and giving customers access to large datasets that lead them to the most relevant products and services.
Having found the same problems across many industries, I find a real passion in learning about new areas and applying tried-and-tested methods in new situations.
Key areas that continue to fascinate me are:
* Agile. As much as this can feel like a basic, I find almost every team has big opportunities for efficiency, clarity, and taking control of their own roadmap to speed product innovation.
* Growth. When teams work well, their capacity to deliver value grows hugely. I find that giving teams goals that will have impact and that are achievable, gives them the courage to get the really important things done. Delivery becomes a habit and growth goes hand in hand.
* Recommenders. We live in a Chat-GPT world, but I find customers still don't have the information that can really help them when they are making choices and spending money. The right product and right personalization are a win-win; it drives conversion and delights consumers.
* Machine Learning. As the pace of technology advances, I see increasing risk that great breakthroughs wind up not in products, but in the R&D lab. As Product Managers, we have a lot to do to keep pace with these advances to ensure they are making a real difference for the companies that invest in them.
Having worked with fast-paced startups (including Rocket Internet companies) and much larger, more established brands, the opportunity to work on innovative, faster, and more rewarding products remains as bright and interesting as ever.
